METHANOL

Description

Methanol is a simple, clear, and colorless alcohol that mixes completely with water. As a primary alcohol, it is often used in industrial and chemical processes. It is a polar solvent, meaning it can dissolve many substances, and it burns with a non-luminous bluish flame.

Common Uses of Methanol

  1. Biodiesel Production: plays a vital role in the production of biodiesel, where it is used in a process called transesterification to convert fats and oils into biodiesel fuel.
  2. Aircraft Fuel: It is combined with water and used as a turbo propellant in aircraft engines, particularly in turbines or piston engines. This mixture provides additional power during take-off, known as power augmentation.
  3. Motor Racing Fuel: is used as an alcohol-based fuel in motorsports. Its high compression ratio (up to 16:1) and ability to cool the air entering the combustion chamber make it more efficient than gasoline. However, it is not suitable for use in regular vehicles, as it can damage engines that are not specially modified.
  4. Paint and Resin Manufacturing: Methanol is a precursor in the production of Urea Formaldehyde and Phenol Formaldehyde resins. These resins are commonly used as bonding agents in the production of chipboard and medium-density fiberboard.
  5. Lacquers and Thinners: Methanol is used in lacquers and thinners due to its strong solvency and high volatility, making it ideal for quick evaporation.
  6. Rubber Industry: Methanol serves as a cost-effective rubber solvent, widely used in the production of various rubber goods.
  7. Ethanol Denaturant: Methanol is used to denature ethanol, making it unfit for consumption, and it is also used in the production of synthetic gasoline.
  8. Other Uses: Methanol is also utilized in printing inks, adhesives, antifreeze, and the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. It has diverse industrial applications due to its chemical properties.

For detailed safety instructions, industrial customers should refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

Safety & Handling:

Flammability: Methanol is highly flammable and burns with an almost invisible flame, so care must be taken to avoid open flames and sparks.
Toxicity: Methanol is toxic if ingested, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin. It can cause serious health issues, including blindness or death. Always work in well-ventilated areas and wear appropriate protective equipment such as gloves and goggles.
Storage: Store methanol in tightly sealed containers away from heat sources and direct sunlight. Ensure that it is stored in a cool, dry place to prevent accidental ignition or evaporation.
Spill and Disposal: In case of spills, use proper containment methods to avoid environmental contamination, and follow local guidelines for the safe disposal of methanol.
