XYLENE

Description

SDS Sheet

Xylene

Xylene Xylol is a clear, colorless liquid with a sweet, aromatic scent. It belongs to a class of chemicals known as hydrocarbons and is primarily composed of three isomers: metaxylene, orthoxylene, and paraxylene, with metaxylene often being the main component. This versatile solvent is highly compatible with vegetable oils, alcohols, ether, and most organic solvents, though it does not mix with water. Thanks to its pure, aromatic properties,  highly effective in dissolving many synthetic and natural resins, fats, and waxes, making it essential in various industrial applications.

Common Uses

  1. Paint and Resin Manufacture: It plays a vital role in the production of surface coatings, particularly when a slower evaporation rate and strong solvency are required. It is commonly used in:
    • Automotive enamels and lacquers
    • Baking enamels
    • Furniture and marine paints
    • Protective coatings
    • Formulation of alkyd resins for enhanced durability and finish
  2. Insecticides and Pesticides: serves as a carrier for many chemical insecticides, aiding in the formulation of effective pest control products.
  3. Printing Inks: Due to its high solvency properties, widely used in the production of printing inks, ensuring even distribution and quality adherence.
  4. Adhesives: It is often a key component in the formulation of adhesives, including rubber cements, where it enhances bonding strength and durability.
  5. Miscellaneous Applications:
    • Xylene is sometimes known as Xylol in industrial settings.
    • It is a component of petrol alongside other BTEX compounds (Benzene, Toluene, Ethyl Benzene, and Xylene).

First Aid:

      • Skin Contact: Wash thoroughly with soap and water.
      • Eye Contact: Rinse immediately with water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.
      • Inhalation: Move to fresh air and seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
      • Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting; seek medical help immediately.

Important: Industrial users purchasing Xylene should review and adhere to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for full safety guidelines and regulations.

Applications & Uses

Xylene (Xylol) is a versatile solvent widely used in various industries due to its strong dissolving power, rapid evaporation rate, and compatibility with numerous chemicals. It is commonly used for paint thinning, degreasing, cleaning, and as a chemical intermediary in manufacturing processes.
